Knowing what to do for New Years Eve is always a tough decision. There’s an overwhelming choice out there but sometimes just the thought of getting there and back – the crowds, the transport, the overall hassle – means you might be tempted just to stay at home.

This is where the idea of spending New Years Eve at a luxury hotel can sound really appealing: you can stay up as late as you want, knowing that your bed is only a few steps away. With many of Britain’s best hotels pulling the stops out for New Years Eve – think fine dining and wine-pairings, cocktails and canapés, dancing, entertainment, casinos, fireworks and who knows what else (you’ll also find falconry, murder mysteries and treasure hunts here) you will certainly be guaranteed a memorable (although not inexpensive) night. It’s one of the most anticipated nights of the year, however, so it’s a great excuse to splash out. But where? Dormy House, Worcestershire
The hotel: Above Broadway in the Cotswolds, Dormy House is the perfect boutique hotel, with an ultra-modern spa, cosy bedrooms, two restaurants and a great eye for what makes a lovely break.
New Years Eve at Dormy House: The hotel was fully booked for residential stays over New Year last year so you have to act fast. There were still tickets available for the evening itself last year: an Alpine-themed evening with gourmet food including a whole spit-roast pig, gravadlax and raclette, champagne, midnight fireworks and dancing into the New Year.

The hotel: Cosy and charming award-winning boutique hotel in Cotswolds stone.
New Years Eve at The Painswick: The Painswick is hosting a ‘New Year, New Ewe’ celebration. Arrive from 3:00pm on New Years Eve and make yourself at home before Champagne and canapé reception from 7pm, then a five-course feast in The Painswick Restaurant followed by a house party with live jazz until 12:30am. Hangover breakfast on New Years Day from 8am. Breakfast and goodbyes on 2nd January.

New Years Eve celebrations start with a Champagne reception followed by dinner at 8.15pm, with dancing and a ‘just for fun’ in-house casino until 1am. New Year at Whatley Manor: While Whatley Manor has no more availability for its New Years Eve package there are still several dining options at this excellent Cotswolds hotel – if you’re pushing the boat out then it has to be the New Years Eve gala dinner (£265 per person) which includes a Champagne and canapé reception, six-course gala dinner in The Sitting Room followed by coffee with live music in The Drawing Room and a toast at midnight to the New Year. An alternative option is the New Years Eve dinner at Grey’s Brassiere at £95 per person, which includes a cocktail and canapé reception, three course menu with coffee and treats, DJ in Greys for dancing and fireworks and champagne at midnight.

After New Year’s Day brunch there’s a trip to the local Stranraer curling rink to try curling yourself before the final six-course gourmet dinner.
